You've probably been wondering what Fukinsei Bags is all about, starting with what "fukinsei" means.
"Fukinsei" means asymmetry or irregularity, and is one of the seven Zen design principles. It celebrates the beauty that is found in asymmetrical yet balanced design, which is exactly what I strive to achieve when designing my bags.
I started Fukinsei Bags as a creative outlet from my stressful day job as a corporate lawyer. While working way too many hours in a soulless box, I became obsessed with sewing and constantly daydreamed about creating fanciful avant-garde pieces (see below doodles on my legal pad).
Throughout all of my sewing adventures, I was consistently drawn to clean lines and pieces that appeal from all angles (no so-called "coffin dresses" for me). That is why all of my bags have a unique, sculptural shape that stands out from the crowd. I know that these bags won't appeal to the masses, but my hope is that they will appeal to a small, select few who appreciate modernist design.
I'd love to tell you about the inspiration behind my bags and how I handcraft them in my studio in Brooklyn. In the meantime, I want to hear about your dream bag. What do you wish existed, but can never find? Let me know in the comments!
